Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl: Health Benefits of Pitaya

Home > Health Tips & News

What is Dragon Fruit?

Dragon Fruit (also known as Pitaya) is a beautiful addition to a smoothie bowl. Its vibrant pink colour and host of health benefits have us enthralled. This unusual looking fruit has its origins in Central and South America. Pitaya is a tropical fruit which is part of the climbing cactus family.

We recently added this to our Superfood section due to customer demand and we’re very happy to have it on board. Its taste falls somewhere between Kiwi fruit and Pear. It’s refreshing and not overly sweet.

Health benefits of Pitaya

Dragon fruit is a low calorie, nutrient dense food. Where it shines is in its anti-oxidant content. It contains several anti-oxidants known to protect our cell membranes. Its high in vitamin C, fibre, Iron and some B vitamins.

If you need any more encouragement to add it to your breakfast repertoire,  there are some studies showing its benefit in improving insulin resistance and heart health. Its also lower in carbohydrate and fruit sugar than many of its other tropical counterparts.Pink Dragon Fruit Cut in Half

How to use Pitaya

You can eat Pitaya fresh in a fruit salad, simply cut in half and scoop out the flesh. If you’re struggling to find it fresh, you can always use pre-prepared frozen Pitaya.

We recently had a breakfast staff meeting which Neville catered for with a tasty, vibrant and more-ish dragon fruit smoothie bowl. Here is the super quick and simple recipe using pre-prepared frozen Pitaya.
